Irby Receives “Best Places to Work” Recognition

The Mississippi Business Journal hosted a luncheon at the Old Capitol Inn on Thursday, June 22nd  to recognize the winners and participants for the 2017 Best Places to Work in Mississippi competition. Irby Construction won second Best Place to Work in Mississippi in the mega-large category. To be eligible for this award, companies must be a for-profit or not-for-profit business, be a publicly or privately held business, maintain a facility in Mississippi, have at least 15 full-time employees in Mississippi, and be in good standing with the Mississippi Secretary of State.

Admissibility for this award was based on a number of employees within each participating company completing a survey. Southern Research conducted all of the research to determine which company ranked first, second and third in categories ranging from small to mega-large, based on the number of employees.

Competing against other mega-large companies throughout the state, Irby stood out. Irby defeated St. Dominic’s, Harrah’s and Jones Companies, while first place went to Viking Range. This competition served as an opportunity for Irby to learn about in-state companies of all sizes, as well as our employee satisfaction. It was an honor to participate in this competition, and Irby employees are excited to aim for first place next year!

Distribution Work— Entergy Bozeman Job

Distribution Work— Entergy Bozeman Job

Distribution Work— Entergy Bozeman Job

Electrical Distribution line construction was a mainstay of Irby’s early years. The company has constructed over 150,000 miles of distribution and low-voltage transmission lines.

In 2016, after taking the job as President, Lee Jones developed a plan to increase our distribution to support our efforts in Minnesota, California, Florida, and increase the company’s local presence in Mississippi. Since then Irby has hired a reputable management team to lead this initiative as well as top quality distribution crews.

Irby is proud to have recently been awarded the Entergy Bozeman Road project. This project consists of adding three new circuits on existing poles coming out of the existing Bozeman Road Substation in Madison, MS. This is a total of 6.6 miles of line.

We have also had the opportunity to do storm work for Entergy on a regular basis since launching the Bozeman Road Project.

The company’s  goal going forward is to continue to SAFELY grow at home in Mississippi and in other areas across the United States to become one of the largest and best distribution contractors in various regions.

Irby’s Jeff Pittman Receives Quanta Award Recognition

Irby’s Jeff Pittman Receives Quanta Award Recognition

Each year, Quanta challenges its employees and all operating units to apply for the CEO Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award. This award brings recognition to the spirit of the individual(s) and operating unit(s) that foster the successful implementation of innovative thinking and the entrepreneurial spirit.

Irby Construction’s Jeff Pittman was honored in the top 10 of the 2016 submittals considered for the Award. Jeff is a utility construction worker who created a line of field applied attachment points for equipotential grounding work in the high-voltage industry referred to as the “Specialized Tool to assist with Equipotential Grounding.” Due to the high risk of electrocution when working around live equipment, it is important to ensure that all nearby surfaces are at the same potential or voltage. Jeff’s invention consists of a means by which high reliability and low resistance grounding connections can be provided for equipotential grounding used in high voltage work.

This safety-enhancing tool is sturdy and durable, and it can be used in equipotential grounding and bonding for high voltage work. It also provides enhanced grounding ability when performing maintenance or repair work around high voltage lines in a manner which is quick, easy, and effective.

“I guess you could say that one could never predict the outcome unless you put forth the effort and try,” Pittman said. “It’s like playing the lottery-you can’t win unless you enter the drawing.”

Congratulations Jeff, on your admirable commitment to safety and your Quanta-recognized invention.

Irby Hosts Blood Drive with MS Blood Services

Irby Construction hosted a blood drive through Mississippi Blood Services (MBS) at the Richland office on Monday, June 5, 2017. Over 30 Irby employees donated blood, with some of us giving double, for a total of 39 units donated.

“I never used to give blood, but I’m healthy, and I realized that there’s really no reason for me not to donate,” Lisa Albright, Assistant to the Irby’s President said. “Now I donate every month that I am eligible. So, I was happy to give at the Irby blood drive.”

The blood drive is a way to give back to the community as well as those who participate. According to Health.com, there are health benefits that donors realize as a result of donating blood, such as more balanced iron levels and better blood flow. MBS launched their Road2Life campaign that registered every donor to win a Dodge truck with a value of over $40,000, which was one more positive factor of donating blood.

MBS Marketing Representative Dana Brohaugh commented, “MS Blood Services requires hundreds of units every day to supply blood and blood products to our hospitals for their patients’ needs.  Because of the generosity of Irby employees, we were able to collect 39 units, which in turn can help save up to 120 Mississippian’s lives!”

After the success of this event, we look forward to hosting more blood drives in the future through MBS, Mississippi’s only donor service headquartered in the state.
